Pillitteri Estates Winery is located in the Niagara Region of Ontario, Canada. It is about 17 km from the world-famous Niagara Falls, which separate the upper Niagara River and Lake Erie, and the lower Niagara River and Lake Ontario. The family vineyards are located in beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake, an official wine appellation in this region.The Niagara Peninsula is Ontario’s largest wine-growing region. It covers about 5,440 hectares, nestled in the centre of the world’s wine belt between 41° and 44° North, and offers ideal conditions for cool climate winemaking. The most widely grown grape varieties are Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Vidal.
Family business with Sicilian roots
The Pillitteri family was already growing grapes in Sicily. In 1948, they emigrated to Ontario to start a new life. Gary, the later founder of Pillitteri Estates Winery, first started growing fruit in the 1960s and then ventured into winemaking in the 1980s as one of the pioneers in the region.The first Icewine was immediately honoured with a gold medal, so Gary converted the entire business and in 1993 fulfilled his lifelong dream and officially opened the Pillitteri Estates winery. Since then, the wines have always been produced in the highest quality according to the standards of the VQA (Vintner’s Quality Alliance).

In the meantime, the company has over 100 ha of cultivation area. Nevertheless, it has still remained a real family business: Gary’s son Charles is C.E.O. (President of Sales), daughter Connie is C.F.O. (President of Operations), daughter Lucy is C.M.O. (President of Marketing), son-in-law Jamie Slingerland is Director of Viticulture and grandsons Richard and Jared are V.P. of Sales and Export Manager respectively. The young generation has made it a special goal to publicise Canadian Icewine all over the world.
