A typical Niagara Cabernet Franc from an exceptional year
A fruity, spicy Cabernet Franc from a great year. Mash fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks and lasted two weeks. The wine then matured for 19 months in new and used French oak barriques.
2020 was a vintage for the ages (in more ways than one). Spring began uncharacteristically warm and became increasingly hot as the summer progressed. There was little rainfall and long periods of perfect growing weather. In the fall, the warm weather extended the season until the end of October. Some of the best wines Niagara has ever produced can be expected from this vintage.
The Pillitteri Carretto or Sicilian cart was traditionally used to carry goods to market and was made in the early 1930s. It was brought to Canada from Sicily by Gary’s mother in 1952 and is now used as the winery’s logo to honor the rich family tradition and the importance of the carretto to the family. Each family vineyard and wine is treated individually, as each has its own “personality” that needs to be expressed. The Pillitteris’ goal is to produce consistent, quality wines for customers: rich, full-bodied reds, fragrant and vibrant whites, all in a variety of styles that appeal to every palate.
And this is what the Cabernet Franc from Pillitteri tastes like
The 2020 Pillitteri Cabernet Franc has a deep ruby red color that hints at its intensity and complexity, and has excellent varietal character without the “green” or peppery notes often found in specimens that lack maturity. Instead, the nose is full of fresh, ripe berries, a hint of licorice and an abundance of cherry flavors accompanied by the complexity of vanilla and the toasted wood of long barrel aging. These characteristics are also found on the palate, which is very well balanced and offers youthful but soft tannins and a rich acidity from the cool climate that highlights the fruit and makes the wine very delicious.
