Creative and extravagant wines from Australia. Viticulture in New England began early in the 19th century and by the 1880s the district was winning international awards for its wines. In 1882, it was described in the Sydney Daily Mail as “one of the leading wine-growing districts in the colonies.” Abandoned vines from that era still entwine around the ruins of old homesteads.
The region boasts Australia’s highest vineyard, at 1320 meters above sea level on Black Mountain. New England Australia is an exciting Australian wine region with a diversity of soils and terroirs. A number of established wineries are joined by cross-border winemaking personalities who are exploring alternative grape varieties and practicing viticulture with minimal intervention, distinguishing the region with some of the world’s leading wine critics as one to watch.
