Adventurous beginnings on a former sheep farm
Amisfield is now one of the largest single wineries in New Zealand. Nestled at the foot of the dramatic Pisa Mountain Range in Central Otago on New Zealand’s South Island, wines are made here that are as pure and pure as the landscape itself. The founder of Amisfield, John Darby, was looking for a perfect place to produce outstanding wine. In 1999 he finally found Amisfield Farm, a former Merino sheep farm. With the planting of the first vines in this place on New Zealand’s South Island, in the middle of the cool, dry continental climate, the foundation for a great wine story was set. Here there are cold winters and hot summers with little rainfall.
Organic viticulture: A matter close to the heart at Amisfield
Amisfield is now one of the most respected producers of Pinot Noir and other cool-climate grape varieties in New Zealand. As Amisfield’s credo is the purity of wine and nature, the winery is currently in the process of fully converting to organic farming in order to achieve organic viticulture certification. Amisfield always emphasises its philosophy of simply wanting to nurture nature with every step they take. Therefore, all processes simply take a lot of time. This is clearly reflected in the purity, intensity and vibrancy of their wines.
Modern winemaking plant under the sign of nature
With a bold shape characterized by pure, simple functionality and an extraordinary pitched roof that captures the echo of the mountains in the background, the Amisfield winery sits harmoniously in the middle of its rural surroundings. The building was designed in 2006 by Christchurch architect Charlie Nott. The two-storey building has a production capacity of 600 tonnes. Here Amisfield’s winemakers can pursue their difficult craft and, above all, support nature to take its course and produce wonderful wine.
