Very good New Zealand wines also come from Nelson. This picturesque region at the northern tip of the South Island is not yet so well known in this country. It benefits from a high number of sunshine hours, a protected, temperate coastal climate and water-permeable, fertile soils.
Nelson is a so-called boutique wine region. On a small scale, some of the most interesting wines from New Zealand are produced here. In addition to excellent Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, impressive blends of less common, up-and-coming grape varieties are produced here. Moreover, this region has long been known for its lush orchards.
The roots of viticulture in this region date back to the mid-18th century, when German settlers planted the first vines. Nelson has a vibrant arts and café culture, and many wineries offer both at their cellar doors.
