Nelson Grüner Veltliner – Hermann’s reminiscence of his old homeland

The Nelson Grüner Veltliner from the Seifried Estate Winery is a project close to Hermann Seifried’s heart. After a long quarantine process following the importation of the vines from Austria, this grape variety was finally allowed to be cultivated in 2008. First, a small area in the Brightwater Vineyard was chosen to plant these very special vines. More recently, the vineyard in Edens Road has also been planted with Grüner Veltliner.

The Edens Road vineyard is an extremely stony area where both water and nutrient levels are low. This helps to significantly limit plant growth and grape yield. To further enhance the flavours, the foliage of the vines is also regularly thinned out. This way, the light yield in the grape zone is much better. The vineyard is located 15 km from the coast and is protected from the south wind by the Richmond Mountains. The soils consist of rock and boulders. This makes agricultural cultivation difficult, but is an advantage when it comes to storing the sun’s heat. The Grüner Veltliner grapes ripen excellently in this location.

And this is what Nelson Grüner Veltliner by Seifried Estate Winery tastes like

Nelson Grüner Veltliner from the Seifried Estate Winery captivates with delicate floral notes. On the nose, it smells of flowers, green apple and almonds, accompanied by hints of white pepper. On the palate, this wonderful white wine from New Zealand is fresh and animating. Apple and pepper notes continue wonderfully. The acidity is piquant, delicate and perfectly integrated. An elegant, very varietal Grüner Veltliner, long lasting.

The Nelson Grüner Veltliner from Seifried Estate Winery is very versatile in terms of food pairing. Its high acidity, lively aromas and refreshing character make it an excellent companion for a variety of dishes. Of course, it goes well with dishes such as Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz with horseradish, roast pork, veal and sausages as well as cheese specialities such as Emmentaler and Gruyere.

It is also an excellent choice for a variety of Asian dishes, including sushi, sashimi, Thai curries and Chinese stir-fries. Its ability to balance spicy and savoury flavours is a standout.

Nelson Grüner Veltliner goes wonderfully with seafood, whether it is a tender fish fillet, prawns, scallops or oysters. Its acidity and citrus notes can accentuate the freshness of the seafood.

The wine’s crispness and green apple notes make it an ideal companion for salads, especially those with vinaigrette dressings, goat cheese or ingredients such as green apples and walnuts. This New Zealand wine also harmonises with a variety of vegetarian dishes, including asparagus, quiches and dishes with green herbs. Try it with vegetable-based pasta dishes.

Whether chicken, turkey or duck, the acidity and fruitiness of Grüner Veltliner can complement the flavours of various poultry dishes. With its notes of white pepper and spices, the wine is suitable for light and spicy dishes, such as Thai and Indian cuisine, where it can provide a refreshing contrast to the spiciness.

Nelson Grüner Veltliner is a good choice for starters such as bruschetta, spring rolls and canapés, as its acidity stimulates the appetite and prepares the palate for the meal.
