Waiheke Island is a young wine-growing region, just 18 kilometers east of the center of Auckland, in the north of New Zealand’s North Island. Viticulture only began there in the 1950s. The island measures 20 kilometers from east to west and 10 kilometers from north to south at its widest point. Today, some of the most famous vineyards in the Auckland region are located here, and viticulture and wine tourism are the island’s most important economic factors.

There are about 25 wineries on Waiheke Island. Due to the limited area, wine production takes place on a truly boutique scale. Restaurants, wine festivals and cellar door events are an important part of the wine scene here. Finally, the island’s scenic backdrops and proximity to the city of Auckland make Waiheke Island one of New Zealand’s most popular destinations.

The Waiheke Island wine region is best known for its elegant Bordeaux blend wines, made from the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, which originate there. The best of these wines compete with similarly priced examples from Bordeaux and Tuscany. Syrah and Chardonnay are also important grape varieties here, and great wines are made from them.

The island’s hilly landscape offers winemakers an abundance of suitable vineyard sites. Most wineries are located on the hills around Onetangi Bay, on the western tip of the island overlooking Auckland, and in the less populated eastern parts of the island.

Compared to the mainland, Waiheke has a warmer, drier climate and thus a correspondingly longer growing season. The Auckland isthmus protects the island from cold, moist southwest winds from the Tasman Sea. The island location also moderates temperatures and balances the extremes.

Waiheke Island is characterized by very old soils of volcanic origin. The weathered bedrock is covered by a relatively thin layer of hard topsoil. The vines have to really struggle to survive in this harsh environment, with low nutrient content and rapid drainage. As a result, the vegetation is low and the berries are rather small. However, they have a high content of phenols, sugars and acids. Basic requirement for the production of great New Zealand wines.
