Behind the Aberdeen Wine Company and the wine “Angus the Bull” is Hamish MacGowan. After graduating from university, Hamish moved to Australia’s Northern Territory to milk cattle in remote cattle ranches. After hanging up his cattle breeder boots, he started working for a small winery in Victoria – this formed the basis for his career as a winemaker and is the reason why he loves the grapes from Central Victoria so much. Since he does not like to stand still, Hamish moved to Europe. He worked for a leading British wine merchant, then as a winemaker in Bordeaux, followed by his most challenging experience managing a winery in Moldova, part of the former Soviet Union. After a while, Australia beckoned again. Back home, he worked as a winemaker and export manager, but in his head an idea formed that he absolutely had to pursue – the idea of creating the perfect wine that goes well with beef. In 2003, he founded the Aberdeen Wine Company to realize his vision. He works together with various winegrowers in Central Victoria and selects first-class plots with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes by hand and creates his great steak companion from them.
