2019 Family Reserve Cabernet Franc Icewine – Red Canadian ice wine with fruit, spice, and freshness

The 2019 Family Reserve Cabernet Franc Icewine is one of Pillitteri Estate Winery’s top wines – made from 100% Cabernet Franc, harvested on January 6, 2020, at -8°C. The vintage was cool and rainy, but late-ripening varieties such as Cabernet Franc benefited from the extended ripening process and an early frost. The result: a powerful, elegant ice wine with intense fruit and a brilliant acidity structure.

The grapes were pressed immediately after harvesting, the highly concentrated must (38.1°Brix) was fermented in cool stainless steel tanks and bottled early. With 208 g/l residual sugar, 7.65 g/l acidity, and 11% alcohol, this ice wine is dense, fruity, and wonderfully balanced—a flagship for Canadian ice wine in rosé color.

What makes Family Reserve Cabernet Franc Icewine so special?

The Family Reserve line from Pillitteri Estate Winery represents the winery’s highest-quality ice wines, with well above-average Brix, residual sugar, and complexity. The wine comes from vines that are over 15 years old, grown on sandy loam with a clay layer over Queenston shale. Thanks to the lake effect and the escarpment topography, exceptional ripening conditions are created here. The result is an ice wine with depth, finesse, and international stature.

And how does the 2019 Cabernet Franc Icewine taste?

The wine shimmers rosé in the glass. The nose is dominated by strawberry, maraschino cherry, raspberry jam, and a hint of baking spice. The palate reveals additional notes of rhubarb, red cherry, and a slightly savory spice. Despite its opulent sweetness, the precise acidity provides freshness and balance—a lush, multi-layered dessert wine with a clear structure and long finish.
