mclaren vale – australia
Concentrated. Robust. Full of character.
Mark Maxwell is multi-talented and a man of vision. The qualities of the winemaker are reflected in the quality of these Australian wines. Because every wine produced by Maxwell Wines is indeed Maxwell-made. Since 1979, Mark Maxwell has understood the unique terroir of his limestone hillside. And to extract every characteristic nuance from each estate wine, regardless of price. The creative winemaker is also a brilliant entrepreneur: in addition to marketing his winery as a wedding or business location, tasting menus and cooking courses, he offers helicopter flights, labyrinth adventures, mushrooms from his own mushroom farm and other events.
Maxwell and the gourmet shop
Some say that McLaren Vale not only has some of Australia’s best wines, but also offers the best regional cuisine in Australia. But few know that part of this reputation comes from Maxwell. In 1969, Mark’s father contributed to the region’s first notable restaurant. And when Mark Maxwell built this winery, it was one of the few with its own restaurant. The menu has always championed fresh, seasonal produce from local suppliers. Although the brilliant head chef, Fabian Lehmann, is anything but local. He has had a stellar career in Michelin-starred restaurants across Europe and his exquisite dishes are now the stuff of Instagram legends.
Maxwell and the art of making mead
Making wine from honey instead of grapes was first introduced in this country by Mark Maxwell’s father Ken (1915 – 2004), whose dedication to this ancient craft set the standard for modern mead making around the world. Today, Maxwell Mead is Australia’s most popular mead and the most successful range in the southern hemisphere. Not only is mead believed to be the oldest fermented beverage, originating in northern China where it was made as early as 7,000 BC, but when the ancient Greeks discovered it, they called it ‘ambrosia’: the nectar of the gods.
