Maxwell Eight Bells Shiraz – The wine to relax with

The Eight Bells Shiraz from Maxwell Wines takes its name from nautical terminology. In nautical terms, Eight Bells (or in German 8 Glasen) stands for the end of a sailor’s watch shift. After the watch, the crew member could relax, eat, drink and seek the company of the other sailors. This Australian wine from McLaren Vale is perfect for such occasions, whether at sea or ashore…. McLaren Vale’s 2019 vintage was low yielding and of very high quality. A very dry winter and cool spring resulted in poor bud break and flowering around October. In December the region experienced amazing wind gusts which damaged some of the newly formed grapes. This was followed by a heat wave that further reduced the crop yields. The lower yields resulted in a higher colour density and a better structure of the wine.

And this is how the Eight Bells Shiraz from Maxwell Wines tastes

The Maxwell Eight Bells Shiraz seduces with its lush, very varietal aroma of blackberries, plums and red fruits paired with peppery notes and subtle oak spice. On the palate, this Australian red wine is full-bodied with plenty of extract. Fleshy plums and black pepper carry through beautifully. The tannins are supple, the acidity perfectly integrated and well supported. A powerful, polished Shiraz from Australia, with a classic McLaren Vale fruitiness and considerable length.

And this goes with the Eight Bells Shiraz from Maxwell Wines

The Maxwell Eight Bells Shiraz is a versatile wine that goes well with a variety of dishes. Its strength certainly lies in the accompaniment of grilled meat. Due to its powerful character and distinct flavours, this Australian Shiraz is a perfect complement to grilled meat. Whether it is juicy steaks, spicy burgers or tender ribs, the intense fruit flavours and spicy notes of the wine perfectly complement the flavours of the grilled meat. Try it also with game dishes such as venison, deer or wild boar. The wine’s strong tannins and rich flavours are in harmony with the rich taste of game meat and complement it perfectly. The smoky flavours of smoked foods such as smoked ham, smoked sausages or smoked trout harmonise well with the flavours of the Eight Bells Shiraz from Maxwell Wines. The wine can enhance the smoky notes while offering a pleasant fruitiness. This Australian red wine is an excellent accompaniment to lamb dishes. The rich, spicy aromas of the wine go well with the intense flavours of lamb.

Whether it is braised lamb, grilled lamb chops or lamb curry, this wine provides a harmony of flavours. The spice diversity of international cuisine, especially from the Middle East or North Africa, goes well with the spicy notes of the Eight Bells Shiraz. The spicy notes of the wine complement dishes with spices such as cumin, coriander, paprika or cinnamon. When it comes to cheese, this Australian Shiraz complements full-bodied and spicy hard cheeses such as Cheddar, Gouda or Manchego particularly well. The wine’s strong tannins harmonise with the texture and flavours of these cheeses.
