Whitehaven Marlborough Riesling – Riesling from New Zealand full of character

38% of the grapes for the Whitehaven Marlborough Riesling come from the Pauls Road vineyard (Rapaura) and 62% from vineyards in Awa-Iti (Southern Valleys). The harvest took place between 28 and 30 March 2022, with the majority of the grapes, around 72%, harvested by hand and the rest by machine. Immediately after the harvest, the grapes were pressed with minimal skin contact. To ensure the clarity and purity of the finished wine and to avoid bitter substances, a press cut was made. This means that the heavier and more tannic part of the juice was separated. After settling and clarification, the juice was fermented at a very low temperature with a selected yeast strain. After all, the aim was to preserve the intense varietal flavours. The fermentation was finally stopped with some residual sugar to balance out the high acidity typical of Riesling.
