Braai-Rindfleisch-Spieße auf einem Holzbrett mit Chakalaka-Relish in einer Schüssel, frischem Koriander und Zitronenspalten, daneben ein elegantes bauchiges Rotweinglas mit Petite Sirah Reserve Mischa Estate aus Wellington, Western Cape, Südafrika.

South African barbecue culture meets South African wine

Ideal wine pairing: Mischa Estate Reserve Petite Sirah (WO Wellington, South Africa)

Petite Sirah Reserve Mischa Estate WO Wellington (Western Cape, Südafrika)

Braai beef skewers with chakalaka relish call for a wine that captures the smoky intensity of the grill, complements the relish’s spiciness, and stands up to the robust beef—and this exceptional Petite Sirah Reserve from the boutique winery Mischa Estate in Wellington achieves exactly that with impressive elegance. In the glass, it presents itself in a deep, dark ruby red with a beautiful purple sheen and a bright red rim—a wine that signals power even visually. The nose develops seductively: smooth aromas of plum and dark berries meet gentle French oak, and with every swirl in the glass, vanilla and nutmeg unfold, giving the bouquet an elegant depth that is not easily forgotten. On the palate, it is full-bodied and rich—dark fruit flavors blend seamlessly with subtle dark chocolate and licorice spice, while the present yet silky tannins virtually frame the juicy beef. The seamless acidity carries everything through the palate to a long, lingering finish. By the way, this wine is best decanted—it opens up with air to reveal a bouquet that impressively demonstrates the complexity of a great South African red wine.
