PREPARATION:
For the marinade, combine olive oil, garlic, cumin, cilantro, paprika, cayenne pepper, brown sugar, salt, pepper, and lemon juice.
Add the beef cubes to the marinade, mix well, cover, and let marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours—preferably overnight.
Soak the wooden skewers in water for at least 30 minutes so they don't burn on the grill.
COOKING STEPS:
To make the chakalaka relish, heat the oil in a pot and sauté the onions over medium heat for 5 minutes until golden brown.
Add the garlic, ginger, and chili, and sauté for 2 minutes.
Stir in the bell pepper strips and grated carrots, and cook for another 3 minutes.
Stir in the curry powder and paprika and sauté for 1 minute.
Add the kidney beans and chopped tomatoes, mix everything well, and simmer over low heat for 15–20 minutes.
Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of sugar. Keep warm.
Preheat the grill to high heat.
Thread the marinated beef onto the skewers and grill over direct heat for 3–4 minutes per side, depending on your desired level of doneness.
The skewers should be slightly charred on the outside and still juicy and pink on the inside.
Let it rest for a moment.
SERVE:
Serve the chakalaka relish on a deep plate or in a bowl.
Place the braai skewers on top of or next to it.
Garnish with fresh cilantro and lemon wedges.
Serve cornbread or white bread on the side.
Serve immediately—braai tastes best straight off the grill.
