Besoain Wines
MAipo Valley – Chile
THE LIVED DREAM OF YOUR OWN VINEYARD
The Besoain vineyard covers 35 hectares of vines. Here in Chile’s Maipo Valley, along the rolling hills of Los Morros, Miguel and Alexandra Besoain realised their dream of owning their own winery.
Miguel, born and raised in Chile, initially studied forestry in his home country. After studying oenology at the University of Burgundy in France, he worked for around ten years in various wine regions in France and in the Palatinate. In 2009, he returned to his home country with his wife Alexandra and their two children. There, the couple set up their own wine production in the Maipo Valley.
The German-New Zealander Alexandra Besoain is primarily responsible for building up the European sales network. The first few years of pioneering work in Chile were very tough, recalls the former flight attendant with university degrees in anthropology, art history and languages. But with perseverance, creativity and optimism, Miguel and Alexandra created their beautiful home – the Besoain Estate. The self-built winery is surrounded by a chain of cactus-covered hills in a breathtakingly beautiful landscape south of the capital Santiago.
WINE REGION WITH A LONG TRADITION – THE MAIPO VALLEY
The Maipo Valley is one of Chile’s most famous wine regions, producing great red wines. French grape varieties were introduced to the Maipo Valley as early as the mid-19th century. With the import, especially of Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carménère, Chilean winemakers wanted to improve the quality and diversity of the local wines.
Miguel Besoain also relies on these grape varieties for his three wine lines LOS MORROS, BESOAIN ESTATE and BESOAIN SINGLE VINEYARD. He also cultivates the white varieties Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. Riesling is the speciality of the Chilean oenologist, who lived and worked in the Palatinate for many years. This has already earned Miguel the reputation of the “Riesling King” in Chile. All the wines show Miguel’s very personal style. They are expressive, fruity, lively wines with a restrained use of wood.
The semi-arid, Mediterranean climate in the Maipo Valley is very stable, with no weather caprices worth mentioning. The average rainfall is around 350 mm per year. The high intensity of the sun and heat during the ripening season are mitigated by cool night breezes coming down from the Andes. As a result, there are strong temperature fluctuations of 28°C during the day and 10-12°C at night. Perfect for a good wine, especially as the natural acidity in the grapes is preserved and their aroma is very pronounced.
