Besoain Single Vineyard Carménère – The dark seducer from the Cachapoal Valley

The grapes for the Besoain Single Vineyard Carménère come from the Las Pataguas vineyard in the Cachapoal Valley. The soils on hilly terrain near the Tinguiririca river are of volcanic origin, with alluvial deposits and large quantities of clay.
The harvest is 100% manual. After the harvest, the grapes are selected by hand, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Before fermentation, the grapes were cold macerated for 5 days to extract color and tannin. Alcoholic fermentation took place in small stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation then took place in French barriques. The wine then matured for 12 months in used barrique barrels (second passage). The aim was to preserve the seductive fruit and not overwhelm the wine with too much wood. The Single Vineyard Carménère was finally bottled in February 2023.
In Chile, the Carménère grape variety, which originates from Bordeaux in France, was confused with Merlot until the 1990s. This very late-ripening variety has almost disappeared in France. In Chile, however, it experienced a meteoric rise.

The Cachapoal Valley is one of the main valleys in the Central Zone. It is located 80 kilometers south of the capital Santiago de Chile and is surrounded by the Paines and Pelequéns mountains. Its climate is mild Mediterranean. Precipitation is around 400 mm per year. The annual temperature fluctuation is high, reaching temperatures above 30 °C in summer and below 10 °C in winter.
