2023 Whitehaven “Block 11” Sauvignon Blanc – Barrel-aged single-vineyard Sauvignon Blanc from the heart of Rapaura
Sauvignon Blanc aged in barrique—that’s not something to be taken for granted, especially not from Marlborough. With “Block 11” from its Single Vineyard Range, Whitehaven proves that this grape variety is capable of much more than just fresh citrus notes and green herbal aromas. Block 11 is located at Paul’s Road Vineyard in Rapaura, the stony heart of the Marlborough wine-growing region, right on the banks of the Wairau River. The freestone silt-loam soil and the unique corner location of this 5.63-hectare block yield grapes of such exceptional quality that, for once, aging in old oak not only works well but is practically essential. Each bottle of this limited edition is individually numbered—a testament to its origin and craftsmanship.
The winemaking process is as minimalist as it is precise: hand-harvested on April 4, 2023, followed by gentle whole-cluster pressing that releases the juice in its purest form. This naturally cloudy juice is transferred directly—without any cold treatment—into old French oak puncheons, where it ferments spontaneously at warm temperatures. The wild, untamed yeast flora of the cellar gives the wine a natural complexity that no cultivated strain in the world can replicate. Over 80 percent of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation—the sharp malic acid is converted into soft lactic acid, giving the palate that velvety, creamy texture that fundamentally distinguishes this Block 11 from classically aged Sauvignon Blancs.
What makes the Whitehaven Block 11 Sauvignon Blanc so special?
Barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc is a rarity worldwide—and virtually unique in Marlborough. With Block 11, Whitehaven demonstrates that this grape variety has a completely different, profound side when given the freedom to age in wood and undergo spontaneous fermentation. Added to this is the winery’s unwavering single-vineyard philosophy: only grapes from the eponymous Block 11 of Paul’s Road Vineyard go into this wine. Each bottle is individually numbered and bottled in lightweight glass—a clear sign of the winery’s environmental consciousness. Whitehaven is a member of the Marlborough Wine Appellation (AMW) and certified by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand, which stands for strict origin and sustainability standards. The wine can already be enjoyed now, but it has the potential to age until 2031 and develop further complexity.
So, how does the 2023 Whitehaven Block 11 Sauvignon Blanc taste?
In the glass, it displays a medium straw-yellow color with bright clarity and a lively sheen. The nose is complex and multi-layered: ripe stone fruit—peach, apricot—blends with citrus and fresh herbs, joined by delicate floral aromas and a gentle woody note from oak aging. In the background, the characteristic creaminess of malolactic fermentation shines through. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and distinctly textural: peach and melon meet lemon zest and dried herbs, while the oak envelops the palate like a delicate cloak and leaves a long, pleasantly full-bodied finish.
