Nebbiolo comes from Italy and is the grape variety behind the cult wines Barolo and Barbaresco. It takes its name from the fog (nebbia) that often occurs in its home region of Langhe. Nebbiolo flowers early and ripens late, so it has a long time on the vine and produces high levels of sugar, acidity and tannins. Balancing these three elements is the biggest challenge for the winemaker. The best Barolos and Barbarescos are wonderfully fragrant, of tar, rose, mint, chocolate, liquorice and truffle. They age brilliantly and the very best need ten years to show their best side.
Nebbiolo is hardly cultivated outside Piedmont. We are all the more pleased to be able to offer you Australian Nebbiolo wines from Longview Wines and Topper’s Mountain Wines.
