Central Otago – New Zealand

A New Zealand-German success story

The winery Weaver Estate Wines, is located in the valley basin of Alexandra in the Central Otago region on the South Island of New Zealand. The family has a long history in this region, dating back to the 1860s, when the first Weavers gained a foothold in Alexandra as a result of the gold rush. The own vineyard has a size of 4 ha. In the farm, which is certified according to the principles of sustainable viticulture, wines of the grape varieties Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris & Pinot blanc are vinified.
The two winemakers, Jess & Kilian, are married and dedicate themselves entirely to the creation and production of high-quality wines. They are helped by new and innovative techniques for wine production as well as ideas they have gained worldwide during their travels and through experiences overseas. Jess Weaver belongs to the sixth generation of the family in Central Otago. She holds a bachelor’s degree in viticulture and oenology from Lincoln University, New Zealand. Her focus is on oenology and Burgundian grape varieties, which she has been intensively involved in for years.

From gold prospectors to viticulture

Kilian Kleine-Tebbe comes from Germany. Both have many years of experience abroad in viticulture. Kilian’s focus is on the development of white wines. Kilian Kleine-Tebbe is a wine technician and master winemaker for viticulture and oenology. The Weaver family works with enthusiasm and passion for New Zealand viticulture, with the aim of producing hand-picked wines of the highest international quality. The unique location of the winery, just a stone’s throw from the Clutha River, where the ancestors of the Weavers used to own mining rights and search for gold, allows the cultivation and development of terroir wines with the characteristics typical of Alexandra and balanced aromas. The Central Otago region of the South Island is known as the hottest and driest region in New Zealand during the summer months, and the coldest in winter. Central Otago is located on the 45th parallel of the southern hemisphere and is the southernmost wine region in the world. In addition to the new, modern holiday homes, directly in the vineyards, the Weaver wines can be tasted in the “tasting room”.
