d’Avola is a red grape variety that is mainly grown in Sicily. It is one of the most important and most widely cultivated grape varieties on the island.

It is assumed that Nero d’Avola originates from the Avola region in south-east Sicily. The grape variety is also known by various other names, including Calabrese, which suggests a connection to the region of Calabria on the Italian mainland.

The grapes from this grape variety are known for their deep red to black colour and thick skin. They produce wines with a rich and intense colour, often described as “inky” or “deep black”. The wines are generally full-bodied and have a high tannin content.

The wines from this grape variety are known for their flavours of dark fruits such as black cherry, plum and blackberry. They can also have notes of spices, herbs and sometimes a hint of chocolate or tobacco. The wines are often very aromatic and have a certain freshness and acidity, which makes them very food-friendly.
