Whitehaven Marlborough Pinot Noir – A classic cool-climate Pinot Noir

The grapes used for the Whitehaven Marlborough Pinot Noir come from Marlborough’s Awatere Valley (54%) and the Southern Valley (46%). The grapes for this wine were hand-harvested during the cool autumn mornings. They were then sorted at the winery, destemmed, and transferred to various stainless steel fermentation tanks. A small portion of the whole grapes, about 5–20 percent, was left whole. After a cold maceration of about 3–7 days, alcoholic fermentation was initiated using wild, indigenous yeasts. The wine remained on the skins for a total of 7 days before being pressed. Aging took place in various French oak barriques. The proportion of new oak was approximately 30 percent. The wine then remained in these barrels for 10 months. Finally, on March 1, 2022, this Pinot Noir was bottled.

And this is how the Whitehaven Marlborough Pinot Noir tastes

The Whitehaven Marlborough Pinot Noir beguiles the nose with a delicate aroma of fully ripe red cherries, blackcurrants and blackberries, with hints of thyme, cedar, anise and dark chocolate. On the palate, cherry and plum flavours continue impressively, accompanied by mineral tones. The texture of the red wine is supple and the tannin silky. The acidity is present and very well integrated. A very elegant, balanced and full-bodied wine with a long finish and good development potential.

And the Whitehaven Marlborough Pinot Noir goes well with it

The Whitehaven Marlborough Pinot Noir is a versatile food companion. It harmonises well with poultry dishes. Try chicken, duck or turkey, whether grilled, roasted or braised. The wine’s lively acids and fruity flavours complement the tender meat of the poultry. It is also a great accompaniment to game dishes such as saddle of venison or roast venison. Its fine tannins and fruity notes complement the intense aroma of game.

The earthy and sometimes spicy flavours of Marlborough Pinot Noir harmonise perfectly with mushroom dishes. A mushroom risotto, mushroom soup or a simple mushroom pan are excellent accompaniments.

Pork dishes, especially those that are lightly smoked or grilled, go equally well with this characterful red wine from New Zealand. Pulled pork, roast pork or pork tenderloin are good examples.

Lamb has a natural intensity and pairs well with the complex flavours of Whitehaven Pinot Noir. Braised lamb chops or leg of lamb are excellent.

Pasta dishes prepared with a rich tomato sauce or a cream sauce are a good choice. Think of dishes like pasta with mushrooms, lasagne or fettuccine alfredo. But this New Zealand Pinot Noir also goes well with lighter fish dishes such as salmon or trout, especially when served with a light citrus or herb-based sauce.

This Marlborough Pinot Noir can be paired with a variety of cheeses. Soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert go well, as do semi-solid cheeses like Gruyère. The tartness cuts through the creaminess of the cheese.

Starters like smoked salmon, vegetable terrines or bruschetta with tomatoes and basil are perfect starters to a glass of this Pinot Noir. And even lightly spiced Asian dishes, such as Peking duck, dim sum or chicken with sweet and sour sauce, go well with this New Zealand wine.
