2024 Pegasus Bay ARIA – A noble sweet Riesling with depth, fruit, and finesse from New Zealand
The Pegasus Bay ARIA 2024 comes from an outstanding vintage in Waipara, North Canterbury. As part of the “Reserve” series, this noble sweet Riesling is produced only in exceptional years. The vines are over 30 years old and grow on the barren, stony terroir of the Glasnevin Gravels—ideal conditions for ripe, expressive grapes with high concentration.
After an exceptionally long ripening period (“hang time”), the grapes—with a Brix reading of approximately 27–28—were hand-harvested on May 7 and 8, 2024. Gentle vinification at cool temperatures preserved the fresh aromas. Some of the natural carbonation was retained, giving the wine its subtle “fizz” and added liveliness.
What makes the Pegasus Bay ARIA in Waipara so special?
The ARIA is the sweet sister of the Bel Canto Riesling and is produced only in exceptional vintages. The combination of old vines, a barren terroir, and a long aging period results in a concentrated, finely balanced Riesling with elegant sweetness. The subtle effervescence from naturally dissolved carbon dioxide brings freshness and lends the wine a youthful energy. A Riesling that is as opulent as it is precise—and can age effortlessly for 10–15 years.
And how does the 2024 Pegasus Bay ARIA Riesling taste?
On the nose, the wine reveals dense aromas of white peach, apricot, citrus zest, and orange blossom, underpinned by honey, lemon curd, and a subtle herbal spice. On the palate, it is creamy, intense, yet well-balanced—supported by lively acidity, subtle residual sugar (92 g/l), and a hint of natural effervescence. The finish is long, clean, and characterized by floral sweetness and freshness. A Riesling with balance and depth.
