Taste Georgian wines full of character from the wine region of Kartli now. It is located in the centre of the country, near the capital Tbilisi. This wine region can be divided into three sub-regions: LowerKartli (KvemoKartli), UpperKartli (ShidaKartli) and Mtskheta-Mtianeti. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 300 to 800 metres. The climate is continental and generally very dry. The soils are very diverse, ranging from volcanic clay in the south to limestone in the north. In this regioni, there is a good mix of tradition and modernity. In addition to old clay amphorae, the so-called qvevris, one increasingly sees the most modern stainless steel cellar technology in the producers’ wine cellars. Kartli has two protected areas of origin (PDO = Protected Designation of Origin): Atenuri and Bolnisi. Bolnisi in particular, with its German cultural influences, offers great wines from the Rkatsiteli and Saperavi grape varieties.
