2025 Whitehaven Gewürztraminer – Rose Blossom, Lychee, and Ginger Spices from Marlborough

The Whitehaven Marlborough Gewürztraminer 2025 is an aromatic gem from the heart of New Zealand—seductive, spicy, and with an unmistakable character. The grapes come from two carefully selected vineyards: Whitehaven’s Rapaura estate and the Riverstone Vineyard in the Waihopai Valley. Both vineyards were trained to 2–3 canes on a vertical trellis system and benefit from the perfect Marlborough terroir: cool mornings, intense daytime sun, and a dry, healthy growing season leading up to the harvest in early April 2025. The result: exceptionally ripe, clean grapes with maximum aromatic expression.

Winemaking began with a gentle hand harvest in the early morning hours. After destemming and crushing, the mash rested overnight in the press before being pressed the next morning. The must settled for 48 hours before being fermented with aromatic yeast at controlled temperatures. The fermentation process was regularly monitored through sensory evaluation and halted when the optimal balance of residual sugar and acidity was achieved. The wine then aged for 3–4 months on light lees, was stabilized, filtered, and bottled on October 22, 2025.

What makes the 2025 Whitehaven Gewürztraminer so special?

This Gewürztraminer embodies artisanal precision and the full expression of the variety. Hand-harvested from two exceptional vineyards—Rapaura and Riverstone Vineyard (Waihopai Valley)—it guarantees perfect ripeness and aromatic purity. The Marlborough Wine (AMW) appellation certification ensures origin and sustainability, while the vegan certification attests to gentle production without animal-derived additives. The controlled fermentation halt process produces an elegant residual sweetness that gives the wine its characteristic balance—aromatic, complex, and with genuine aging potential.

And how does the 2025 Whitehaven Gewürztraminer taste?

In the glass, the wine displays a medium lemon-yellow color with lively clarity. The nose is enchanting: rose petals, orange blossom, and subtle hints of ginger unfold into a classic, varietal bouquet. On the palate, the Gewürztraminer is lush and complex—lychee, ginger, clover honey, and ripe citrus intertwine to create a medium-bodied, balanced sweet wine with a long, invigorating finish. Gewürztraminer at its finest.

Reviews

  • Mundus Vini Spring Tasting 2026 – Silver
  • „Aromas of Turkish delight, old fashioned red roses and raspberry marshmallow-like flavours all combine on the nose of this Gewürztraminer. It's a medium sweet style with 19.6 grams residual sugar per litre, which brings weight that is balanced by notes of freshness from Marlborough's cool nights – this gives freshness and acidity to this wine's lingering taste." Joelle Thompson, 17.5/20
