2023 Bel Canto Dry Riesling – A characterful Riesling with depth and finesse from Waipara, New Zealand

The Bel Canto Dry Riesling 2023 is a wine from Pegasus Bay’s Reserve series—and is produced only in exceptional vintages when noble rot occurs naturally. The vines grow on the famous Glasnevin Gravels in Waipara, North Canterbury—a terroir known for its stony soils, cool nights, and long growing seasons. These conditions produce perfectly ripened, highly concentrated grapes with a crisp acidity profile and aromatic complexity.

The grapes were selectively hand-harvested in late April—with a natural botrytis content and a high ripeness level of 25.5 Brix. Fermentation proceeded slowly under temperature-controlled conditions to preserve the fruit and freshness. The wine was fully fermented and bottled with a hint of natural carbonation—which gives it liveliness and vibrancy.

What makes the Bel Canto Riesling so special?

Produced only in exceptional years, the Bel Canto Dry Riesling captures the unique characteristics of Waipara in a bottle: gravelly soils, cool nights, a long ripening period, and naturally occurring noble rot. The 2023 vintage impresses with its ripeness, freshness, and depth—supported by structure and vibrant fruit. A characterful, complex Riesling from New Zealand for explorers and lovers of the variety.

So, how does the 2023 Bel Canto Riesling taste?

In the glass, the wine glows with a clear golden hue. On the nose, exotic aromas of pineapple, mango, and orange blossom unfold—accompanied by notes of kumquat, quince, and wet stone. On the palate, the Bel Canto is generous, yet precise and full of tension. The ripe phenols provide texture and length, while the lively acidity lends structure and freshness. A dry Riesling with depth, liveliness, and a long, invigorating finish.
