Noble and fruity Syrah from the Gimblett Gravels (Hawke’s Bay)
\nIn 1993, Trinity Hill, as one of the pioneers, began planting wine on the barren gimblett gravel plot in the former riverbed of the Ngaruroro River. A complete success, as it turned out. Today, these 800 hectares are the most sought-after vineyards in Hawke’s Bay. The 2019 season was very warm and brought with it ideal growing conditions.
\nThe Syrah grapes were all harvested by hand from different blocks within the Gimblett Gravels and then fermented individually. 30% of the grapes were fermented as whole grapes to add freshness, aroma and structure. In some cases, small amounts of Viognier shells were added to gain additional complexity and flavors. The must was pumped daily over the grape skins, or the skins were submerged by hand to achieve an optimal extraction of color and tannin. This was followed by an 8-month maturation of the individual wines in large 5000-liter oak barrels, in order to bring the individual characters of the individual wine plots into the light through the slow maturation.<\/p>\n

Wild raspberry, blueberry, freshly ground pepper and notes of vanilla pods are the aromas of Trinity Hill Gimblett Gravel Syrah that show up on the nose. A powerful and well integrated ripe tannin gives the wine a good structure. The subtle oak notes only play a supporting role and frame the intense fruit expression. The clarity in combination with the refreshing acidity speaks for good aging ability of the wine. The increasing bottle maturity will produce a further spectrum of aromas.
