The name Coleraine is derived from the Coleraine vineyard, home of John and Wendy Buck of Te Mata Estate. John’s late grandfather was born in Coleraine in Northern Ireland and the name has survived from the family seat to this great New Zealand wine. Originally a single-vineyard wine, Coleraine has been an assemblage of the finest wines since 1989, coming from various plots of Te Mata Estate’s oldest vineyards in the Havelock Hills. Each grape plot was destemmed before a traditional mash fermentation with prolonged maceration took place on the skins. The resulting wines were then aged for 17 months in predominantly new French oak barriques. During this time, they were regularly replenished and refilled. The final blend consists of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot.<\/p>\n

The Te Mata Coleraine beguiles with a concentrated scent of ripe cherries, black plums and wild blackberries accompanied by lavender, thyme, juniper and sandalwood and cedar wood. On the palate, this red wine offers a great depth and complexity, red fruits continue wonderfully, accompanied by mocha, a firm, delicate acidity and refined tannins give the wine structure.
