Sven Ulfsson, the King of Denmark reports for the first time about an excellent wine from &#8220;Vinland&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1535: <\/strong>When Jacques Cartier, a settler, first sailed up the Saint Lawrence River, he discovered wild vines on \u00cele d&#8217;Orl\u00e9ans, which he christened &#8220;\u00cele de Bacchus&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1611:<\/strong> Louis H\u00e9bert, a French settler, plants a small vineyard in Bear River, Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1811:<\/strong> John (Johann) Schiller, a German-born non-commissioned officer plants found wild vines of the Vitis Labrusca variety on about 9 hectares in Cooksville, Ontario<\/p>\n<p><strong>1866:<\/strong> Three Kentucky landowners plant around 8 hectares of Catawba and Delaware vines on Pelee Island. As early as 1974, the first sparkling wine was produced by the Podamer Champagne Company. But the market for fine sparkling wines only developed in the late 1990s and early 2000s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #282828; font-size: 120%;\">It was Niagara wineries such as 13th Street, Henry of Pelham, Trius and Cave Spring Cellars that specialised in producing sparkling wines that were fermented and aged in the bottle. Later, the Huff Estate and Hinterland wineries followed, recognising the potential of Prince Edward County&#8217;s even cooler climate and limestone soils.
